Nestled 6 km (4 miles) south of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula, Playa San Josecito is a hidden gem that offers a secluded and tranquil escape. Scarlet Macaw parrots frequently perch on the beach almonds, making for a delightful sight. Offshore, rocky outcroppings create a calm cove perfect for snorkeling and exploring coral formations teeming with tropical fish.<\/p>\n

While the beach can be accessed by boat or hiking, we highly recommend taking the scenic jungle trail from Drake Bay for a truly immersive experience. The trailhead starts in Drake Bay, where a hanging bridge crosses the turquoise waters of the Rio Aguijitas. Follow the signs for Playa San Josecito\/Rio Claro to weave through a short section of forest near some hotels before descending down to the beach.<\/p>\n

The hike takes about 2.5 hours each way, making it a perfect day activity. Along the trail, you’ll come across half a dozen secluded beaches and coves, including the private and less-visited Cocalito’s Beach. This isolated beach, only 30 minutes from Drake Bay, offers a short walk through the jungle and a wobbly suspension bridge over the Agujitas River. It’s worth the adventure, as you’ll be rewarded with an uncrowded beach and the opportunity to spot monkeys, parrots, and iguanas in their natural habitat. Snorkelers can also expect to see an abundance of marine life offshore when the waters are calm.<\/p>\n

Another must-visit spot is Caleta’s Beach, a hidden gem en route to San Josecito. While not easily accessible by car, the 45-minute hike is well worth the effort. This beach boasts a hotel, but visitors should come prepared with enough water and supplies, as there are no grocery stores in the area.<\/p>\n
